Welcome to Anderson Instructional Design! I’m Athena Rayne Anderson, a freelance instructional designer and eLearning developer.

The ubiquitous and all-knowing “They” say that I must have a photo of myself on my website so you’ll feel a personal connection with me. They say this will, in turn, make you more likely to hire me. I’m a very private person and wouldn’t put my face online anywhere if They didn’t insist…

So, in the spirit of connecting (and getting hired), here’s a head-shot of me. It took many draft photos and a lot of dirty jokes from my co-workers before we got this one, so enjoy:

Yes, there’s a mole on my left nostril. No, it doesn’t bother me. In fact, I keep it as a conversation starter. It’s a family heirloom from my Nordic ancestors. Some people collect stamps; I collect moles. I color it black at Halloween and ride around on a broom.

But, seriously… what makes me qualified to work on your ID or eLearning project? Here are a some highlights from my career:

  • M.Ed. in Instructional Design with 3 award-winning projects
  • 15+ years college-level teaching & course design
  • Quality Matters Certified Online Instructor
  • Interdisciplinary Certificate in University Teaching from the Graduate School of the University of Georgia

In a nutshell, I understand how people learn, both novices and adults. I design eLearning with an eye on accessibility (ADA compliance) and inclusion (culture, race, gender identity, etc.) to reach as many learners as possible. When designing instruction, I incorporate a lot of active learning, learner-centered strategies, and research-based methods. I have a clean, simple style and use a lot of visual aids.

Have a look at my portfolio to see examples of my ID and eLearning projects, with an explanation of reasoning behind various aspects of each.

Fun facts about me:

  • I love nature- you’ll see a lot of that around my site
  • In my first life, I was a scientist and I hold a Ph.D. degree in Ecology… I recycle everything and have to bite my tongue when I see people throwing recyclables in the trash
  • I love cats, and am a Certified Feline Training and Behavior Specialist and cat rescue volunteer
